My love for baking began long before I ever imagined owning a bakery. As a young girl growing up in Ghana, my family operated a small home bakery where Ghanaian sugar and tea bread were baked in traditional clay ovens. Mr. Isa, our bread maker, always knew exactly when to arrive. Like clockwork, he appeared on time and transformed large batches of dough into beautiful loaves of bread. I was fascinated by the speed, skill, and precision with which he worked. Seeing my curiosity, Mr. Isa would invite me to join him at the table, teaching me how to shape the dough. Those moments sparked a lifelong passion for baking and cooking.
Years later, that passion grew into an entrepreneurial journey. More than fourteen years ago, I began baking and selling Ghanaian sugar and brown bread to African grocery stores, family, and friends. My goal was simple: provide fresh, preservative-free baked goods that reminded people of home while maintaining the highest standards of quality.
As my customer base grew, so did my vision. I started inviting my American friends to try Ghanaian food. While many were curious to try them, some were hesitant to try unfamiliar dishes. That inspired me to create foods that combined familiar flavors with the ingredients and traditions I grew up with. I began incorporating West African ingredients such as mango, guava, coconut, calabash nutmeg, grains of selim, grains of paradise and many more into
some of our breads, pastries, and savory dishes.
The response was overwhelming. People who had never experienced West African cuisine discovered flavors they loved through foods they already knew and enjoyed. One of the inspirations behind our menu comes from my childhood. My mother would make Ghanaian Chicken Light Soup and serve it with noodles and fufu. It was a comforting meal I especially craved during the colder months. When I introduced this
dish to friends, they loved it. That experience confirmed what I had begun to realize:
Food has the power to connect cultures and create community.
From that realization, the idea for a West African Fusion bakery was born. In 2024, I began seriously considering opening a brick-and-mortar location. After sharing my vision with trusted friends and mentors, they encouraged me to take a leap of faith. Despite the challenges and costs involved, I knew it was time to create a space where people could experience the flavors, traditions, and hospitality that had shaped
my life.
Today, BroDough STL Bakery Café is the realization of that dream.
